In-Person Program Coronavirus (COVID-19) Safety Protocol

(Revision date: Feb 28, 2021)

Dear Parents,

The health and safety of our students and teachers is of utmost importance to us. With safety in mind as we begin our emergence from quarantine, we are implementing a carefully prepared protocol to be followed in our in-person progtrams. Below is an outline of the measures we are taking to minimize risk within our classrooms. Please read carefully.

  • Bionerds Tustin Classroom:
    • Our HVAC filter in our unit was changed to a MERV13-equivalent one.
    • Our classroom will be sanitized before, during, and after class using disinfectants. During non-class hours, the classroom and tools will be sanitized with handheld UV light as needed.
    • The room will be equipped with clear acrylic plexiglass dividers on the tables where registration taking place and in between students on the same table. Clear signs are placed to maintain social distancing on the walls and floor.
    • The air in the room will be constantly purified with air purifiers to capture 99% of common airborne PM 2.5 pollutants.
  • Newport Beach programs: All classes held in Newport Beach will be offered outdoors only.  Shade will be available, but we recommend applying sunscreen to your child before they attend camp.  Click here for their Participant Guidelines Protocol.
  • City of Irvine protocol for parents – click here.
  • For other facilities, we will follow their classroom situation and class policy that may be different from one site to another.

  • For our camps: No students allowed to stay for full-day camps. All registrations are for half-day camps.
  • The size of the classroom we are assigned will determine the number of students that we can accommodate to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
  • A waiver form with health questionnaires will be sent to parents before class and required to be carefully filled out, signed & submitted DAILY BEFORE CLASS. It is important for you to notify us immediately if the status of your child’s health changes throughout the session.

  • Bionerds staff is trained to follow guidelines implemented by the facility and information about COVID-19.
  • The temperature of each Bionerds staff is taken and recorded DAILY BEFORE CLASS.
  • The daily COVID-19 health questionnaire is filled out by each Bionerds staff to confirm they are not exposing the risk of infections to others in class.
  • The staff clean tables, desks, and lab equipment with disinfecting wipes before, during, and after class to minimize the spread of germs.
  • They will follow the same CDC guidelines as students to combat the spread of the virus:
    • Wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds before, after, and during class.
    • Use hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
    • Cover mouth with tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing.
    • Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick with any illness.
    • Maintain 6ft social distancing and wear mask or face shield in class.
  • Teachers will stay at home when they are sick. A substitute teacher will be placed when available.
  • Bionerds applies restrictions on offering our programs to the affected areas if any. Travel precautions for our teachers applied.

  • All parent COVID-19 health questionnaires will be verified that they are submitted and evaluated. If it is not received, the student cannot enter the class.
  • Parent or adult guardian is required to accompany child to class each day. Please arrive a little early and please be patient and follow the process. Drive-up check-in may be performed depending on the facility’s capability.
  • Parent & child must wash/sanitize hands before coming to the registration table. If a bathroom is not immediately available, please use hand sanitizer as you approach the registration table.
  • Adult guardian & child must stay 6 feet away from others while in line for sign-in/sign-out.
  • Please be prompt when arriving for the drop-off procedure and pick-up procedure. Plan ahead.
  • Do NOT enter the classroom unannounced. Wait at the door and knock but do not enter. The teacher will meet you at the door when it is safe to do so. This pertains to both adult parent/guardian and child.
  • Parents or adult guardians or siblings are NOT allowed to stay in the classroom to observe during class time to avoid unnecessary large gatherings.
  • Before the child can enter the classroom, the child’s temperature is taken and recorded with a touchless thermometer.
    • If the child has a fever of more than 100.4F, the parent must bring them back home. They cannot enter the classroom.
    • If no fever detected, the parent signs the student in and the child can enter the classroom.
  • Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, mask, and hand sanitizers in a bag/backpack. They will be not allowed to use shared amenities such as water fountains.  Avoid contact with personal belongings with others.  Please label all of the personal belongings with the student’s name.
  • Students MUST wear a face mask at all times provided by the parent to join the class and the mask must completely cover the nose and mouth indoors and outdoors when adequate social distancing is not possible. Failure to comply will result in a phone call to parents and possible immediate removal from class and immediate parent pickup.  Please stress the importance of compliance with your student.  Please communicate with us if your children have any medical/underlying conditions, so we can discuss further.
  • Please be ready with a back-up plan in case students have to be picked up immediately or in the event the student showing symptoms or the class is canceled due to staff or participant test positive for COVID-19.

  • STRICT behavior guidelines for students in class will be implemented to ensure safety in class. Failure to comply and follow directions will result in a phone call to parents and possible removal from class. Please read our Participant Code of Conduct here:
  • Bionerds Staff and students must wear parent-provided facial covering (as outlined above) when 6ft social distancing is not possible. Gloves will be worn in some class activities we have and will be provided by Bionerds.
  • Students will be seated 6 feet away from each other.
  • Each student will be provided with individual materials & tools for the class that have been cleaned and sanitized with disinfectant before and after class and in between uses as needed.
  • During the break, students can eat their snacks and drink and play but keeping the 6-feet social distancing. Bring a book to read during the break is recommended.  No shared toys/board games.
  • For shared equipment such as microscopes, we will use digital microscopes with digital screens to be contactless. When possible, we will connect microscopes to a laptop so the observations can be projected to a screen for the whole class to see.
  • Hand sanitizer in the classroom will be available. Please have students wash or sanitize their hands before and after camps.  We will take students to wash their hands during the break and camp regularly.
  • No Bionerds laboratory coats will be worn in class. Disposable arm sleeves protection may be worn as needed instead in class. Students should wear clothes that can get dirty/stained from dissections and during activity/craft time (such as sharpies, paints, markers, glue).

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick with any illness.
  • Let a teacher know if they begin to feel sick during class.

  • Classrooms will be disinfected daily before, after use, and during classes. This includes high-touch areas such as tables, chairs, doorknobs, etc.
  • All tools (such as microscopes, craft tools, dissection tools, etc.) used within the class will be sanitized daily, between and during classes as needed.
  • Disinfectants used in our Bionerds Tustin facility are below (may change depending on supply availability).  For our other contract facilities,  please contact the facilities directly for more information.

  • Adult guardian must be on time for pick up and follow the facility site pickup procedure. Drive-up check out may be performed depending on the facility’s capability.
  • Be patient and allow time for pickup procedure.
  • Please walk students to the bathroom to wash hands/sanitize with hand sanitizer after picking up.
  • Parents/adult guardians/siblings (i.e anyone not registered for the class) are NOT permitted to enter the classroom. Wait patiently outside the classroom door and the teacher will release the students one by one. The adult guardian will sign the student out as they are released individually.
  • Students with a completed Going Home Slip will wash hands and then be allowed to leave the classroom at the end of class.
